ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College ACHA Division I men's hockey team opened its season to rave reviews on Saturday night, defeating visiting Niagara 4-1 in front of an appreciative Arrington Ice Arena crowd.
The Bulldogs fell behind early 1-0, but then scored four unanswered goals to earn their first win of the season and hand the previously undefeated at Purple Eagles their first loss of the year.
Niagara's Nick Smith started the scoring in the first period with a power-play goal with 12:50 remaining, but the Bulldogs answered quickly on an unassisted marker by Trevor Benaglio (Battle Creek, MI) to tie the score 1-1 at the first intermission.
Adrian took the lead for good in period number two, as the 2014-15 Division I player of the year Brad Kobryn (Burlington, ON) scored his first goal of the season on the power-play with assists from Chris Derochie (Rossland, BC) and freshman newcomer Tyler Duarte (West Lorne, ON). Duarte's assist began an impressive debut for the freshman newcomer, who went on to score the Bulldogs final two goals of the game.
The first Duarte marker was scored with 8:08 left in the second stanza, with Justin Polischuk (Victoria, BC) and Bobby Bodette (Garden, MI) picking up assists in making the score 3-1 after two.Bodette earned another assist on Duarte's second goal, another power-play tally and the only goal in the third period.
The Bulldogs carried the play to the Purple Eagles for most of the evening, outshooting Niagara 27-12 through the first two periods and 36-21 for the game. The Bulldog power-play was 2 for 5 on the evening while holding Niagara to just one power-play goal in six tries.
Sophomore Austyn Roudebush (Toledo, OH) picked up his first win of the campaign in goal, making 21 saves.
With the win Adrian is now 1-0 while Niagara Falls to 3-1. The two teams will square off again Sunday afternoon to conclude the two-game series at 2 p.m. in Arrington Ice Arena.
