Gary Astalos Selected to Lead Adrian College ACHA Division I Men's Hockey Program

ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian College athletics director Mike Duffy has named Gary Astalos as the head coach of the Bulldogs' American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I men's hockey program. Astalos will officially begin his new job duties on June 1.

"Adrian College has an excellent reputation both on the ice and in the classroom," Astalos said. "I am looking forward to building on the previous successes and excited for the challenge to compete at the ACHA D-I level. I am very thankful to (Adrian College) President Jeffrey Docking, Coach Duffy and NCAA Head Coach Adam Krug for the opportunity to lead this program as we look to compete for a league and national championship; most importantly competing hard every single night."

Astalos comes to Adrian after serving last season as the head coach and director of hockey operations for the Kingsville Kings, a South Division member of the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League in Ontario, Canada. He led the Kings to a 39-3 record and they won the division title by 10 points. He also was named the GMHL All-Star Game head coach and was a 2016 Russell Cup finalist.

"Gary has a solid background in developing hockey players and has experience not only within the ACHA but also our conference," stated Duffy. "We are happy that he has accepted this new appointment and look forward to seeing him make an impact with our ACHA D-1 program."

For two years from 2013-15, Astalos was the head coach and general manager of the GMHL Sequin Huskies. He led Sequin to a 73-8-4 record and the 2015 GMHL Russell Cup Finals. He was voted the 2014 GMHL Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the league's regular-season title. He coached in two all-star games.

Astalos received a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in management from Eastern Michigan University in 2012. He was a team captain and most valuable player at Eastern Michigan. He earned All-Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League accolades and an invitation to the USA Hockey Evaluation Camp. He also represented EMU at the ACHA D-1 All-Star Game.

Astalos played his junior hockey for the Missoula Maulers of the American West Hockey League and the Kenai River Brown Bears out of the North American Hockey League.

Astalos' off-ice hockey experience includes serving as a head scout for the NAHL's Odessa Jackalopes and North American professional scout for the Czech Republic Second Liga team, HC Beroun. He also founded the Michigan Pre-Draft Showcase that has featured over 800 players who aspire to play college and professional hockey before 75 scouts in attendance.

"I am committed to bringing a hard-working attitude and dedication to the rink every day with the desire to build a competitive, sportsmanlike, education-first hockey program at Adrian College," added Astalos.
