BEMUS POINT, N.Y.--Adrian College, which is nationally ranked 10th in the BassRankings.com Power Index and No. 15 in the Cabela's collegiate bass fishing poll, turned in its best finish at Saturday's 83-boat Fishing League Worldwide Northern Conference Event No. 2 held here on Chautauqua Lake.
Junior Jarrett Martin and freshman Zach Graham claimed first place to pace four Bulldog boats in the Top-25. The duo netted a one-day catch of 16 pounds and 3 ounces comprising five fish to clinch their third consecutive victory. They collected winnings of $2,400 to edge Jake Dorony and Hunter Scharphorn who had 15-6 for Lake Superior State University.
"The pair has an uncanny ability to fish with instinct and their gut instead of waypoints and someone else's information," says third-year Adrian coach Seth Borton, "which is a lost art for the majority of this 'technology saturated' generation of anglers. Three wins in a row is an achievement and I am proud of all of our guys."
Sophomore teammates Jack Hippe and Nick Czajka also had an outstanding day on the water in third place with a 15-3 haul on five fish and $700 in winnings. The duo has placed in the top ten in their last three events.
"Both teams--Jarrett and Zach and Jack and Nick--were previously qualified for the national championship (for next season) which speaks volumes about their consistency and ability to adapt to each fishery and ever changing conditions," stated Borton.
Several other AC teams had solid showings, but ended up just shy of qualifying for the collegiate national championship: senior Caleb Taylor/junior Nick Marsh in 34th (8-3/5), freshman Conner Gough/sophomore Austin Fralick right behind in 35th (8-1/4), sophomore Jason Richardson/freshman Blake Johnson in 47th (5-13/2), freshmen Myles Jackman/Hunter Schneider close by in 49th (5-0/3), and sophomores Brandon Herzberg/Ryan Sharnas in 54th (4-6/3).
Adrian will have its season finale on Saturday, Sep. 9, in the NLW Northern Conference Event #3 in Sandusky, Ohio on Lake Erie.
