LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Bulldog baseball team needed a strong pitching performance on Sunday after giving up an average of 7.75 runs per game through the first four games of the season. They got exactly that and more as junior Eric Schmidt and senior Rylie Robinson combined on a six-hit shutout of Transylvania in a 10-0 win improving the team's record to 2-3.
Schmidt (1-0) thrived in his second start of the season going seven innings and allowing four hits (one double) with one walk and six strikeouts. Robinson finished the final two innings in relief for just the fourth time in the last two-plus seasons. He allowed two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. No one in the Pioneer lineup had more than one hit.
Adrian jumped ahead with six runs in the top of the second inning. Corleone Desimone delivered a two-run single to center field for the game's first runs. Ryan Dorow followed with a two-run double to left center to make it 4-0. Mitch Stefanski made it the third two-run scoring play in the inning with a triple to center field.
Adrian tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Sam Fischer had a RBI single to left center and Dorow had a RBI after an error by pitcher Dalton Collett. The Bulldogs added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings. Dan Heatherly had a RBI single in the sixth and John Joseph had a RBI single in the ninth.
Fischer, Stefanski, Heatherly and Zach Kolvey each had two hits on the day. Fischer, Stefanski and Kolvey were each hit by a pitch as well. Desimone scored a pair of runs as did Drew Shutes while walking twice. Adrian batted .287 during the spring trip with a team earned run average of 5.84. Shutes led the team with a .583 average (7-of-12) including six runs, two doubles, one home run and three RBI. Stefanski batted .353 (6-of-17) with a team-high seven RBI.
