GREENSBORO, N.C.--Adrian College senior outfielder Ian Mikowski (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Northview High School) and junior starting pitcher Tommy Parsons (New Albany, Ohio) were tabbed late Thursday evening to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America Division III second and third teams, respectively.
That signals the first time in Adrian history that two Bulldogs received ABCA All-America status in the same season. The duo also was the only representatives out of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Yesterday, both Mikowski (first team) and Parsons (third team) also were named D3baseball.com All-Americans.
Mikowski, who is Adrian's only (co-) Mideast Player of the Year by D3baseball.com, also was voted the MIAA co-Most Valuable Player and a first-team pick. After concluding NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship action, the sports management graduate leads the nation with a .580 on-base percentage, is second with a school-record 83 hits (leader has 84), 45 walks, 68 runs scored (leader has 69), school-record 42 stolen bases, and is fifth with a .472 batting average. His career year also included all-tournament team honors at the Midwest Regional, where the two-time ABCA All-Mideast Region First Team standout led the Bulldogs with six hits and five stolen bases in as many attempts and batted .429 in three games.
Going into the final weekend of the NCAA Division III season, Parsons leads the nation in victories (12-1, a school record) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (14.43). The two-time ABCA All-Mideast Region First Team choice also ranks second with a school-record nine complete games, eighth with fewest walks per 9 innings at 0.68 and ninth with a school-record 101 strikeouts. The business management major and two-time MIAA Pitcher of the Year and first-team member also led the conference with a 2.23 earned-run average and school-record 93 innings pitched. Earlier this season, Parsons went 44-1/3 innings without issuing a walk for what's believed to be a Division III all-time record and 25 scoreless innings for the 18th-longest streak in D-III history.
All told, the Bulldogs program has produced eight student-athletes who have earned 17 All-America certificates (7 ABCA, 10 D3baseball.com) since 2008--and all under 24-year head coach Craig Rainey.
