Football Falls to Hope College on Senior Day, 33-14

ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College football team lost to visiting Hope College 33-14 on Senior Day Saturday in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action, but the final margin did not indicate how close the contest was played. 

THE BASICS
= Final Score: Hope College 33, Adrian College 14

TOP DAWGS
= Senior Jerron McGaw led all receivers with five receptions and 58 yards.

= Classmate Emmanuel Stewart ran 26 times for 138 yards.

= Freshman quarterback Jack Wurzer was 9-for-16 for a tidy 98 yards and two touchdowns.

= Senior linebacker Chris Adams led all defensive players with 10 tackles and 15 total.

= Also in double-digit total tackles: senior linebacker Tim McPhee (6+8=14), freshman defensive back Brandon Kwiatkowski (7+5=12), and senior LBs Lawrence Austin, Nate Conner (both 8+3=11).

THE OPPOSITION
= Mason Opple produced 350 yards of total offense on 19-for-29 passing for 179 yards and 27 carries for another 171--responsible for four touchdowns.

= Tate Knapp had eight total tackles, including three for loss (20 yards) and two sacks (19).

= Nick Holt added six tackles while Jeremiah Purnell (4 solo) and David Bos matched him with six total (2 solo).

= Mike Miklusicak rushed 23 times for 95 yards.

= Cooper Cecchini led the team with 55 receiving yards (5 catches) while Christian Bos grabbed a HC-best six catches for 45 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Hope struck first for the only points of the first quarter when Tate Knapp and Ian Gorgenson tackled Stewart for a one-yard loss in his end zone for a safety.

= The Flying Dutchmen stretched the lead to 16-0 in the second quarter after Opple TD passes to Christian Bos for four yards at 14:14 and Jake Kozlowski for 21 at 12:05. An Adrian fumble at its own 32-yard line led to the second scoring drive.

= Adrian began to rally with 6 minutes and 36 seconds remaining as Joe Cleary caught an 18-yard TD pass from Wurzer to cap an 11-play, 65-yard scoring drive in 5:29.

= On the Bulldogs next possession, Wurzer tossed a 25-yard TD to sophomore Donald Scott as Adrian closed within 16-14 at the 1:39 mark before the half.

= In the second half, Hope outscored Adrian 17-0 on a field goal and two 1-yard TD rushes from Opple to seal the victory.

= Hope led in time of possession (35:37-24:23), total offense (448-209) and first downs (26-12).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Hope leads the all-time series 51-25-1. Adrian, however, is 7-4 in the last 11 meetings.

= Wurzer finished the season with a 161.7 passing efficiency rating, which is second in school history behind current student assistant coach Clayton Uecker who posted a 168.3 in his only year with the program in 2017.

= Austin, a converted wide receiver, ends his career with a season's best 62 total tackles and 113 overall.
