ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College Division 3 ACHA men’s hockey team opened its season in a big way on Tuesday night with a 12-3 victory over Northwood University before an appreciative crown at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs scored early and often in this contest, scoring four times in each period of the game, while filling the scoresheet with the names of 15 different players who had goals or assists on the evening.
Wade Herbert and Alex Egan led the Bulldogs' attack with two goals apiece. Hebert scored both his goals in the first period, scoring back-to-back markers after Jordan Ruelle had opened the scoring for Adrian with the first goal of the season.
In addition to Ruelle’s opening goal, Adrian’s offense produced single goals from Scott Mattern, Michael Butler, Henry Gabriel, Gerin Hohl, Kyle Schultz, Ted Tarvis and Paul Gorski. Tarvis was the leader in assists for the Bulldogs with three helpers for four points on the evening. Picking up two assists on the night were Butler, Anthony Longo and Alex Armour.
Ben Perone made his debut between the pipes for Adrian, stopping 18 shots and holding Northwood to just one goal until the Timberwolves would score a pair of power play goals in the middle of the third period. Timberwolves goalie Nick Allen surrendered eight goals before giving way to Brendan Campbell, but Allen was able to rack up 38 saves, while Campbell had 8 saves, as the Bulldogs outshot Northwood 58-21.
Adrian will now wait ten days before opening a two games series against the University of Tampa on Friday, October 20 starting at 3 p.m. Game two of that series will be on Saturday at 1 p.m.
