Men's Lacrosse Wins MIAA Opener over Calvin
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener on Wednesday proved to be an easy game for the Bulldogs as they defeated Calvin College, 17-6, on one of the more pleasant weather days of the spring.
Head Coach Don LaSala used the conference opener as a chance to start several of his reserves against a Calvin squad that fell to 2-6 with the loss. Adrian took a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and increased their lead to 9-2 by halftime. Five different players scored for the Bulldogs in the first as Brendan Harvey, Clayton Warren, Matt Scherer, Adam Findlay and A.J. Smith all found the back of the net in a span of 5:30.
Nick Karapas, Tom Thielman and Brett Maguire each scored in the second quarter while Thielman's goal coming on a man-up opportunity. Warren also scored his second goal of the game and season at 6:20 of the second.
Jake Waldrup notched back-to-back goals to start the third quarter and ended the quarter with a third goal at the 7:39 mark. Scherer notched his second of the game as did Findlay at the 6:26 mark. Mitch Burgin scored a man-up goal at 5:51 for his 20th of the season.
Adrian added two more goals in the fourth quarter as Burgin scored his second of the game at 10:04 and Scherer made it a hat trick at 4:50. Brett Farrelly got the start in net and made five saves. Adrian's Bobby Green and Harvey each had a pair of assists on the night. The Bulldogs claimed 17-of-27 in the face-off circle with Warren going 9-of-17. The Bulldogs also caused 10 turnovers and scooped up 28 ground balls. Alex Smith led the team with four ground balls.
