Spartans Knock Bulldogs Out of NCAA Tournament, 22-13

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs met the Aurora University Spartans Wednesday evening in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and Adrian could not recover as the Bulldogs fell to the Spartans, 22-13. This loss solidifies the Bulldogs 2014 record at 13-4.

Aurora started the game fast as they would take the opening face-off and score just five seconds into the game. The Bulldogs would then answer as Eric Fannell scored at the 13:18 mark to tie the game, 1-1. Aurora would continue their hot offensive start as they would score six straight goals to leave the Bulldogs behind, 7-1 with 6:31 remaining. The Bulldogs would fight back before the end of the first as Mitch Burgin scored from Doug Boyd, and Tom Thielman scored twice to cut the Aurora lead to 7-4 at the end of one. The two teams then locked down their defense in the second as each team scored just one goal. Bugin would score his second of the game from Brendan Harvey, but the Bulldogs would trail at the half, 8-5.

The second half saw the Spartans start off by adding to their lead with the frist four goals of the half. The Bulldogs would then answer with three goals of their own as Doug Boyd scored twice and Mitch Burgin added another to leave the score at 12-8. Aurora then answered again as they would score four of the next five goals in the game to advance their lead to 16-9 with 9:41 left in the game. The Bulldogs could not overcome this deficit despite scoring eight second half goals as Adrian fell to the Spartans, 22-13.

Doug Boyd scored four goals and added two assists. Mitch Burgin scored four goals and Tom Thielman added three goals.

Kevin Lerg (12-4) made the start in the net for Bulldogs as he made seven saves and added two ground balls.

The Spartans had the advantage in the face-off circle (30-39) and collected 38 ground balls while Adrian recorded 22. Aurora recorded 15 turnovers while Adrian had 10.
