Men's Lacrosse Wins First Game in the Brett Wetzel Coaching Era

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio--Freshman Chris French led all scorers with career highs of six goals and eight total points as the Adrian College men's lacrosse team erupted for a season high in goals to double up host Franciscan, 16-7, in non-conference action on Saturday.

THE BASICS

TOP 'DAWGS
= Freshman Christian Aurand led the team with nine ground balls and led all defensemen with eight caused turnovers.

= Freshman Grant Nesbitt tallied a career-best four goals while tying his career high in points. He also had four ground balls.

= Classmate Max Leventis won 10-of-23 face-offs but contributed eight ground balls and he caused two turnovers.

= Senior Morgan Caldwell chipped in both a pair of goals and assists for a four-point day to go along with five ground balls.

= Freshman Peyton Gasche had a terrific statline of two goals, seven assists, nine points and six ground balls--all career highs except for the latter.

= French also posted eight ground balls for another career best and two caused turnovers.

THE OPPOSITION
= Jonathan Lee led the Barons with four goals and went 12-for-20 in the face-off "X."

= Jerome Harkins scooped up a game-best 13 ground balls, had six caused turnovers and scored a goal

= Dan McCartney added three points on a goal and two assists, plus he had four ground balls.

= Grant McKeown made 17 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= After spotting the Barons a 1-0 advantage, Adrian jumped out to a quick start by scoring the next three goals and seven of 10 in the first quarter. Lee found the back of the cage with 13 minutes and 33 seconds remaining for a 1-0 Franciscan lead. Adrian, however, started to take control with three goals--including French and Morgan while man-up--over a span of 4:30 to take a 3-1 lead. French also scored an even goal at 10:23 showing on the clock during that stretch that put Adrian ahead for good.

= The Bulldogs outscored the Barons 4-0 in the second quarter to take a commanding 11-3 cushion into halftime. 

= Besides the scoreboard, the Bulldogs also dominated key statistical categories in ground balls (58-35), turnovers (18-30), caused turnovers (23-12), shots (44-20), man-up situations (4-for-8, 1-for-3) and shots on goal (33-13). 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Adrian's 23 caused turnovers are the most in team history since the school record of 25 set at Mount St. Joseph on March 6, 2011.

= The 58 ground balls are third-most in Bulldogs history and the most since 68 in the 2019 season opener at Wabash.

= Gasche ties Josh Maluta's AC single-game assists record of seven, set at Otterbein University, April 13, 2011.

= Andrew Suitor had eight caused turnovers against Trine on April 5, 2008--as Aurand ties that single-game mark in AC history.

= Adrian sophomore attack Kawi Cooper notched his first career goal to begin the scoring in the third quarter at 12:39.

= The Bulldogs avenge last season's loss at home to the Barons, 16-9, in the schools' first meeting.

= Adrian snaps a 10-game road losing streak, earning its first win since April 22, 2017 (at Calvin, 12-10).
