Men's Soccer Falls in Championship to Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Adrian College men's soccer team lost to Calvin 2-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship Match on Saturday, Nov. 3. It was the second year in a row the two teams met in the championship.

THE BASICS

Final Score: #1 Calvin 2, #2 Adrian 1

Records: Adrian 8-8-1 (5-2 MIAA), Calvin 18-1 (7-0 MIAA)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Calvin opened up the scoring in the 16th minute, from a play developed off a free kick. The Knights sent the ball deep into the zone and crossed it in front for the goal. Calvin would double its lead before half, scoring again in the 40th minute to make it 2-0 heading into the break.

Adrian would get one back in the 61st minute, when sophomore Justin Tobin scored his first goal of the season. Junior Garrett Miller took a corner kick where senior Dolan Bonkowski met the ball with his head in the box. Bonkowski headed the ball over to Tobin, who used his own head to knock the ball home to cut the deficit in half.

The Bulldogs would not be able to score another goal and tie the match up, falling to Calvin in the championship match for the second year in a row.

• Tobin scored the Bulldogs' lone goal.

• Bonkowski and Miller picked up assists.

• Junior goalkeeper Spencer Brown made six saves in the match.

THE OPPOSITION

• Bobby McCaw and Lucas Albrecht scored for the Knights.

• Trent Vegter and Ian Adams added assists.
