Bulldogs Drop First to UWSP, 3-0
ADRIAN, Mich. - It was a scoreless night for the Adrian Women's Hockey team as they fell to Wis.-Stevens Point 3-0 in the first game of the NCHA Quarterfinals. The Bulldogs have a chance at redemption tomorrow as they will attempt to tie up the series and force a 20-minute mini-game.
The Bulldogs and the Pointers made it almost to the first intermission scoreless, but Michelle Lunneborg of Wis.-Stevens Point found the net with 12 seconds remaining in the first period to send the Bulldogs into the locker room trailing 1-0. The Bulldogs outshot the Pointers 13-5 in the period.
The second period was a scoreless one for both sides with the Bulldogs again outshooting the Pointers 17-4. Adrian trailed 1-0 late in the third period and was in need of a goal, but the Bulldogs were unable to find the net. Erin Marvin added two Pointers goals in the last six minutes of the game to make the final 3-0.
On the night, Adrian managed to outshoot Wis.-Stevens Point, 44-16, but all of those shots were saved by Janna Beilke-Skoug of the Pointers. The loss for Adrian snaps a nine-game winning streak, and nine games in a row in which the Bulldogs had scored a power play goal.
Senior Brittany Zeches had a tough night in net, allowing three goals while stopping 13 shots from the Pointers. Sarah Connelly fired ten shots but was unable to connect on the night.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2 pm from Arrington Ice Arena as the Bulldogs try to even up the series. If Adrian were to win, it would force a 20-minute mini-game immediately following the third period. If the game were to end in a tie or a Pointer win, then Wis.-Stevens-Point would advance to the semifinal round of the NCHA O'Brien Cup Playoffs.
With tonight's loss for the Bulldogs, the two teams are now 6-6-1 against each other. The Bulldogs had won the previous four meetings.
