SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Bulldogs took on Sewanee College Wednesday night in their first game of the 2014 season. Adrian looked to find their stride early in the season as they met the 5-1 Tigers.
The Bulldogs fell behind early to a 1-0 deficit but they rebounded with six goals before Sewanee could answer as they jumped out to a 6-1 first half lead with 8:01 remaining. Brianna Plester, TaShina Salas and Maddie Dugan eached talled two goals and Hannah Early added an assist as the Bulldogs controlled the first 30 minutes of action and outshot the Tigers 11 to 7 for the half and carried a 6-2 lead to the break.
The second half saw Sewanee come back into the game and the Bulldogs have to fight off their charge. The Tigers scored the first three goals of the half as they cut the Adrian lead to 6-5 with 24:43 left on the clock. The Bulldogs then quickly responded as they took their lead to 7-5 just 26 seconds later as Christina DeSantis scored on a free position shot. Sewanee would tally two more quick goals to tie the game at 7-7 and the Bulldogs saw themselves in a fight. Plester scored her third of the game with 18:54 remaining to take back the Adrian lead. Plester and the Tigers would seemingly trade goals for the remainder of the scoring as she would top every goal Sewanee would score and secure the Bulldog victory. Plester scored the game-winner with 4:04 remaining as she broke a 9-9 tie to give Adrian its first victory of 2014 at a 10-9 decision.
The Bulldogs were led by Plester as she scored five times, including the final three Adrian goals.
Jul Tehovnik made the start in goal for Adrian as she put her record at 1-0 in 2014 by making 14 saves.
The Bulldogs will play Saturday, March 8, as they face Denison at 1 p.m. at Sewanee College.
