ADRIAN, Mich. – It was a tough day for the Adrian College volleyball team as they were swept in a Tri-Match with Defiance College and Olivet College on Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to 10-19 overall and 4-12 in the MIAA.
In the first match of the day was senior day for the Bulldogs as they fell to Olivet 3-0 (23-25, 17-25, 17-25). Adrian fought to stay with the Comets as five lead changes and 17 ties in the first two sets, but the final set was all Olivet as Adrian was unable to ever tie the score.
The second match of the day pitted the Bulldogs with the Yellow Jackets. Both teams refused to go quietly as all total there were 14 lead changes and 34 ties. Defiance jumped out to an early lead taking the first set. The second was Adrian's as they fought off Defiance as they tried to battle back several times to take the win. In the third set, it was Adrian who battled back after falling behind midway through the set. After falling in the fourth set, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead in the final set. Leading 6-1, Adrian was unable to hold on to their lead as the Yellow Jackets were able to fight back and score 14 of the next 20 points to take the set and the match 3-2(18-25, 25-23, 30-28, 12-25, 12-15).
Senior Rebecca Tincknell (Troy, Mich./Troy) led the Bulldogs offense with 28 kills in the two matches, including hitting a team season-high 17 against Defiance while adding in 11 digs. Junior Roxanne Duran (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) had two solid games as she had a double-double (14-20) against Defiance while adding in four kills and 10 digs against Olivet. Sophomore Stephanie Holloman (Southfield, Mich./Roeper) had a combined 14 kills for the two matches and three blocks. Danielle Bogedin (Shelby Twp, Mich./Utica), a freshman, had nine kills and two blocks on the day. Fellow freshman Ashley VanHouten (Cadillac, Mich./McBain) put down seven kills while making a match-high five blocks, two solo, against Defiance.
The Bulldogs used three setters throughout the day, including senior Katie MacFarlan (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) who led the way with 32 assists, while also getting 15 digs. Sophomore Kristy DeClercq (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) had a team-high 28 assists against defiance, while junior Joanna Slisinger (Sterling Heights, Mich./Cousino) had 12 assists.
On defense, senior Jamie Taylor (AuGres, Mich./AuGres-Sims) had a match-high 23 digs against Defiance, while getting eight against Olivet.
Adrian advanced to the MIAA tournament and will travel to face the number two seed Calvin College at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2.
