Baseball Doubles Up Marietta, 8-4, to Improve to 7-1 on the Season

ROME, Ga.--Adrian jumped out to an 8-0 lead and then held off a late Marietta rally to double up the Etta Express, 8-4, in non-conference baseball action at neutral site Berry College on Sunday.

THE BASICS

= National Rankings: Adrian is No. 26 by American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (215 points) and "receiving votes" in D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (50 points) poll; Marietta is "receiving votes" by ABCA/CBN.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Korey Mazur went 2-for-4, including a double and home run, with three runs batted in.

= Classmate Zack Zschering also had two hits.

= Freshman Maxwell Denny improved to 3-0 on the season. He scattered six hits in five scoreless innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

FOR THE OPPOSITION
= Damian Yenzi went 2-for-5 with two RBI at the top of the order.

= Brady Cottom and Drew Wilkinson also had two hits apiece with the former getting an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian raced to an 8-0 lead by scoring in each of the first five innings and never trailed.

= Senior Dugan Darnell hit a two-run double to right field to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

= Leading 3-0 after two, Mazur padded the advantage to 5-0 with a two-run double to left field in the third.

= In the next frame, sophomore Thomas Miller singled up the middle to plate a couple of runs to building the lead to 7-0.

= Mazur wrapped up the scoring for the Bulldogs in the fifth when he belted a solo home run.

= Marietta got back into the game in the top of the sixth with three unearned runs. Yenzi tripled to right center two score a pair to get the Pioneers on the board and he later scored on a wild pitch.

= Marietta cut the deficit in half, 8-4, with a Cottom sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Pioneers could have scored even more but left the bases loaded. Junior Spencer Ford (1.2IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 1SO), Adrian's second reliever of the afternoon, induced Wilkson into a groundout to second base for the third out and escaped the jam.

= The Pioneers got only one runner on base for the final two innings so the Bulldogs didn't break.

= Marietta had 12 runners left on base and outhit Adrian 10-7.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian improves to 3-7 all-time against Marietta, which holds NCAA Division III records for most championship tournament appearances (38), wins (159) and national titles (6).

= Darnell pitched the ninth and retired the side in order. In his first season on the mound, he has six strikeouts in three scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

= Denny tops the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with three victories.

= Adrian has a six-game winning streak while outscoring the opposition 72-22.

= The Bulldogs match the 2012 squad that also started 7-1.
