No. 12/19 Baseball Whitewashes Visiting Olivet Comets, 8-0 and 10-0

ADRIAN, Mich.--Nationally-ranked Adrian shut out Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Olivet in both ends of a baseball doubleheader on Saturday, taking the first one 8-0 before blitzing the visiting Comets in the second, 10-0.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior Pierce Banks (W, 4-1) got the win in the opener, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings against one hit allowed. He worked around seven walks and struck out six batters.

= In Game 2, freshman Max Denny improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season after going five scoreless innings in which he allowed four hits and two hits while striking out seven.

= Junior Brady Wood was 3-for-4, including two doubles, three runs scored, two walks and three runs batted in on the afternoon.

= Senior Zack Zschering finished the day with three hits, four runs and two stolen bases.

= Sophomore Thomas Miller also had three hits during the doubleheader to go along with three runs and two RBI.

= Senior Korey Mazur completed the twinbill with three hits, three runs, three RBI and three RBI.

THE OPPOSITION
= Dalton Giddings went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

= Riley Bennett had two hits combined today.

= Matt Hewitt and Trevor Savage (1 hit) walked twice in games one and two, respectively. 

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 1
= After a scoreless first inning, Adrian went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Mazur scored on a fielding error by the second baseman that would have ended the frame.

= The Bulldogs exploded for five runs on four hits and two walks in the next inning to widen their advantage to 6-0. Richardson doubled down the left field line to bring home two runs and cap the big rally.

= Adrian outhit Olivet 9-3.

= The Comets left 10 runners on base. Their best chance to get on the scoreboard was the top of the fifth when Hewitt walked and Riley Bennett singled with no outs. Jake Robinson reached on a fielder's choice that created runners on the corner bases and one out. Senior Jesse Marks relieved Banks and got Logan Sella to pop up to shortstop and Seamus Mitchell to hit into a fielder's choice to end the threat unscathed.

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 2
= Adrian jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Junior Gunner Rainey got the rout going with a RBI-single to right field and Mazur singled through the left side for two more runs.

= The Bulldogs scored four runs in the second to blow it open. Miller, Rainey, Wood and Mazur had RBI's during a five-batter span to spark the rally.

= Olivet had its chances to cross the plate, but left 14 runners on base. The Comets left them loaded in the sixth and eighth. In the former instance, junior relief pitcher Jake Land struck out Trevor Walters swinging. In the latter, sophomore Sean Millspaugh fanned No. 1 hitter Hayden Zimmerman after OC got two walks and a single in the eighth.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian holds a commanding 111-58 lead over Olivet in the all-time series, including 68-35 at home.

= The Bulldogs haven't lost to the Comets at home since March 29, 2004 by a 3-2 score.

= Denny leads the MIAA with a 5-0 mark while Banks ranks third in the conference with 30 strikeouts. Denny also is second with a 1.48 earned-run average.

= Zschering is tied for fourth in MIAA stolen bases with 14.

= Three Bulldogs are in the top-5 in conference batting: sophomore Brandon Cooper (2nd, .443), Zschering (3rd, .419) and Mazur (5th, .386).

= Adrian pitching shuts out a MIAA opponent in a twinbill for the first time since 2012 (at Alma on April 1, 2012, 4-0 and 6-0).

UP NEXT
= These same two teams travel to Olivet on Sunday morning to complete their four-game series. The first game was moved up two hours for an 11 a.m. start to help beat the forecasted wet weather.
