HOW IT HAPPENED
It was neck and neck in the first set, with the largest lead of the set for either team being three points. Adrian took a 20-18 to win the race to 20 points and then traded points with the Saints. After Emmanuel won two points in a row to tie the set at 23, AC was able to respond and take the set, capped off with a kill from freshman Tedrick Gula.
The second set was the least close of the sets played to 25 points, with Emmanuel taking it 25-20. The Saints opened up the lead in the middle part of the set and didn't allow the Black and Gold back into it for the five-point victory. It was also Adrian's worst set for hitting percentage, as the Bulldogs connected at just a .152 clip in the second set.
Emmanuel was able to take a decent lead in the middle of the third set, like the second, but Adrian rattled off four points in a row to knot the set at 15 each. It was tight for the next five points, but the Bulldogs led 23-20 and looked to close the set out. The Saints didn't quit, and picked up three in a row of their own to knot the set at 23. AC then won three of the final four points, with a service ace from senior Michael Burkhardt taking set point.
The fourth set also needed extra points to reach a finish, with Emmanuel taking it 29-27 to force a fifth set. The Saints opened a late, four-point lead but Adrian came back to force extra points. The Black and Gold were up by one with a chance to win twice but just couldn't find a way to get it done, and Emmanuel took three points in a row to end the set and force the decisive fifth set.
It was all Adrian in the fifth set, as the Bulldogs never trailed in the set on the way to a 15-8 set victory. The Bulldogs hit .467 in the final set and match point was won off a kill from senior Mike Gold.
• Junior Noah Marcinkowski had a season-high 22 kills, the third-most kills in a match in program history. Burkhardt was right behind him with 19 kills, a new career-high
• Junior Joseph Campana finished with 51 assists, two shy of the school-record he set last week against Goshen.
• Erik English and Mike Kokoros led the Saints' offense with 18 and 17 kills, respectively.
• Seamus McDonagh had a game-high 56 assists.
• English and McDonagh led Emmanuel's defense with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Adrian finishes play in the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational later today with a match against Johnson & Wales (R.I.) at 6 p.m.
