HOW IT HAPPENED
The first period ended the same way it started – knotted at zero. Each team had plenty of chances to score, with each teams' six shots all being quality chances. Adrian dominated the faceoff circle in the first, taking a 13-5 advantage into the intermission. St. Thomas had the best chance of the period late, when a shot bounced off freshman goaltender Denisa Jandova and popped up into the air. Jandova made a quick move to turn around and swat the puck out of the air with her catching glove to prevent the puck from crossing the line and preserve the scoreless tie.
It was more of the same in the second, with another 20 minutes not enough to see a goal scored in the game. Both teams had power play chances in the middle frame, with Adrian putting seven of its 12 shots in the period on goal during the two man-advantages the Bulldogs had. Overall AC had an 18-15 advantage in shots after the second and continued to control the draws, with a 24-11 advantage after two.
Adrian finally broke the scoreless tie 3:50 into the final frame, when junior Taylor Henthorne scored. Freshman center Jessica VonRuden won a faceoff in the defensive zone and junior linemate Maggie Mitter picked up the puck and carried it out of the zone. She continued with the puck and took it the length of the ice herself and put it on net. Henthorne was crashing the net hard and was able to get her stick on it to give the Bulldogs the lead.
That would be the only goal either team needed as the two sides skated even for the rest of the game to give Adrian the win and third place in the country. Jandova picked up her sixth shutout of the year and VonRuden's and Mitter's assists gave each of them four points in the NCAA Tournament this year.
• Henthorne scored the only goal in the game.
• VonRuden and Mitter picked up assists on Henthorne's goal.
• Jandova stopped all 22 shots she faced for her sixth shutout.
• Alyssa Wallace led the Tommies with five shots on goal.
• Eryn Cooley made 23 stops in net.
