HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started off with a quick substitution, as senior Colleen Cater was subbed off 23 seconds into the game. Cater has been out with an injury all year but was able to start her final home game as a Bulldog and came off the pitch to a standing ovation from the AC supporters. At halftime, Cater was recognized as the team's Bulldog of the Year, the first time the award has been given out not at the end-of-the-year banquet.
It didn't take long for Adrian to get on the board, as freshman McKenna Mahoney opened the scoring four minutes into the match. Junior Caroline Fleming took the ball up the left wing and sent a low cross into Mahoney to redirect past the keeper. Mahoney would double the lead in the 29th minute when she scored again. Fleming once again picked up the assist, sending a long ball towards Mahoney that split the Finlandia defense. Mahoney fired from just inside the box and her shot just slipped through the keeper's hands and into the net to make it 2-0.
Fleming would net a goal of her own shortly after Mahoney's second, converting on a free kick in the 31st minute. Adrian was fouled in the middle of the pitch about 30 yards from goal and Fleming was able to put the free kick over the leaping keeper to make it 3-0. The Bulldogs would score once more before halftime, as senior Rachel Rodeheffer headed home a ball in the 45th minute. Junior Kimberly Lindberg took a corner from the right side and found Rodeheffer in the box for Rodeheffer's third header in the last two home matches.
Nearly half an hour would take place in the second half before the Bulldogs found the back of the net again, when sophomore Raquel Church scored her sixth of the year in the 75th minute. Sophomore Mya Oleksiak stole the ball at midfield and flicked it on to fellow sophomore Angela Davis. Davis saw Church making a run and sent a lob pass over the defenders where Church could run it down and put it past the charging keeper.
Adrian would get one more before the match ended, as freshman Juliana D'Agostino scored the first goal of her career in the 81st minute. Sophomore Megan Abela stole a goal kick in the attacking third and passed it over to D'Agostino, who curled a beautiful shot into the top-left corner.
• Mahoney, Fleming, Rodeheffer, Church, and D'Agostino all scored for the Bulldogs, with Mahoney netting two goals.
• Fleming, Lindberg, Davis, Oleksiak, and Ablea all added assists, with Fleming helping twice. Fleming's 29 points this season ties her career high from last year and also ties herself for ninth place for points in a season in program history. Her nine assists ties her for third place in a season with herself and three others as well.
• Junior Ayverie Giller and sophomore Kristin Page split time once again for the clean sheet victory and were not called upon to stop a single shot in the match. The Bulldogs have now posted three consecutive clean sheets and have recorded shutouts in six of their last eight matches.
• Addie Budzinski took the lone shot attempt for the Lions.
• Goalkeeper Haley Makela had a busy night, making 14 saves in the match.
"We didn't have many seniors this year, but what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality. Colleen has been this team's rock all year long, and she is just a constant reminder of what it means to be a Bulldog. She's been working non-stop all season long just to have a chance to step back on the field and she deserved every second of the ovations that she received every time her name was spoken tonigh." – Head Coach Ali Alamdari
"Rachel has just been an absolute force since she arrived two years ago. We wanted to limit her time tonight in preparation for the conference tournament and it was perfectly fitting that her last touch of the ball was a goal just before halftime." - Alamdari
The Bulldogs will then host a semifinal match in the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. They will play the winner of the Calvin vs. Kalamazoo match taking place on Saturday, Oct. 27.
