ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College softball team hosted No. 8 Trine University Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell behind to Trine early as the Thunder posted six runs over the first two innings. The Bulldogs would look to mount their comeback as K'ya Toles-Burton knocked a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Thunder lead to 7-6. This comeback fell just short as Trine would hold on to drop Adrian to 10-7, 0-1 on the season.
The Thunder would jump out on Adrian with two runs over the first two innings to chase starter Kaitlin Lock from the circle. The Bulldogs responded with a timely two-run double from Kaitlyn Hinojosa down the third base line that scored Kaitlyn Schneider and Taylor Van't Land to cut the Trine lead to 6-2. Kelsey Meyer would step into the circle for the Bulldogs and pitch five innings while allowing one run and striking out four batters.
The Bulldogs found themselves down 7-2 heading into their final at bat. They would find a spark immediately as Morgan Brandt and Karissa DeVore hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Rebecca Greco would follow with a walk before Toles-Burton hit a grand slam to left center field to bring the Bulldogs to within one run at a 7-6 score and no outs recorded in the inning. Trine retired the next two Adrian batters to leave the Bulldogs with one out and still in need of one run to complete their comeback. Schneider would hit a stand-up triple down the right field line to put the tying run on third base. Trine would bring in Justine Robles and she secured the Thunder victory by recording the final Bulldog out for her first save of the season.
The second game of the doubleheader between the two teams was postponed and will be played tomorrow (3/30) at 5 p.m. at Adrian College.
